Abbey Tea Rooms, Tewkesbury - Gloucestershire Gold Award
Assessor: Roger Bache
The Visitor to Tewksbury who does not visit this unique place is missing a trick! A splendid display of planting varied and so dense it was impossible to identity the soil or growing medium plants were thriving in. Clearly the owners’ passion where table space was less important than plant space as the massive Hosta testifies to. Quirky, eccentric, eclectic........take your pick but if the cakes are as good as the gardens then a Gold award really is well deserved. PS Check out the outside lavatories! Attractiveness of planting - A wonderful eclectic mix of annual and sustainable planting that compliments the equally eclectic Abbey Tea Rooms themselves. The planting here is wall to wall and of excellent quality. This place really should be on everyone's bucket list.
Sustainability - There is off site composting. Snail collection not pellets and can watering not hose. Colour across the seasons and the space enhanced with old and antique gardening and work tools. Quality of Care and Maintenance - Clearly loved and well tended. Slug damage to the hostess clearly not for the want of trying as the evening collection of hundreds of slugs and snails proved.
